Bulbophyllum cruentum

Bulbophyllum cruentum

This orchid is a small-sized epiphytic species found in the lower montane forests of Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya. It has pseudobulbs that become rugose (wrinkled) with age, about 1.2 inches (3 cm), with a single apical leaf.

  • Light: It requires dappled shade. The light must be filtered or indirect; avoid direct sun to prevent leaf burn.
  • Temperature: It is a warm to cool growing orchid. A suitable daytime temperature range is 68-86°F (20-30°C), with a slight nocturnal drop.
  • Humidity: It benefits from good ambient humidity, ideally between 50% and 70%, which is essential for its growth.
  • Watering: It needs to be potted in an open medium and requires good air circulation. Like many montane forest orchids, the medium should be kept moist but never soggy, with regular watering.

Additional Notes

The plant produces a very short inflorescence, up to 0.8 inches (2 cm) long, with one or two very fleshy flowers, about 1.5 inches (3.75 cm), which are held against the base of the pseudobulb.
