Laelia anceps var veitchiana

Laelia anceps var veitchiana

This is an easy-to-grow, popular Mexican orchid variety, known for its resilience and ability to handle temperature changes. It is an ideal beginner's orchid that grows as a medium-sized epiphyte.

  • Light: Bright, filtered light. It can handle direct morning or late afternoon sun but should be protected from harsh midday sun. Similar to or slightly brighter than a Cattleya.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to cool-growing. This orchid is very tolerant of wide temperature swings. Aim for a daytime temperature of 68-86°F (20-30°C). To ensure flowering, night temperatures must consistently drop by at least 10°F (6°C), staying above 50°F (10°C) is ideal.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high, ideally between 60-85%. Good air circulation is essential, especially with higher humidity.
  • Watering: Water heavily during the main growing season (spring to fall), but let the mix dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter resting period after it finishes flowering. It grows well mounted or in a very porous, coarse bark mix.

Additional Notes

The veitchiana variety is famous for its semi-alba flowers, which have pure white sepals and petals. The lip is a striking light lavender/blush with a yellow center and dark venation. The fragrant, star-shaped flowers are borne on a long spike.
