Sobralia pulcherrima

Sobralia pulcherrima

This beautiful orchid is an epiphytic or terrestrial species. It is a large plant with thin, cane-like stems and pleated leaves, and its name, pulcherrima, means "most beautiful," referring to its striking flowers.

  • Light: Bright, filtered light to bloom well. Protect the delicate, pleated leaves from direct, intense sunlight to prevent scorching.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to Cool-Intermediate conditions. Keep day temperatures between 68-86°F (20-30°C), with a necessary drop at night into the 55-60°F (13-16°C) range.
  • Humidity: High humidity is required, ideally 70-80%. Always ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues in the high humidity.
  • Watering: Water heavily and often to keep the potting mix constantly moist during growth. The mix must drain quickly to avoid standing water and root rot. Water less frequently in winter.

Additional Notes

The large, showy flowers are produced successively at the stem tip. Like all Sobralia species, the individual flowers are short-lived (lasting about a day).
